This beautiful shot was orchestrated by my brother last night. It was taken on his roof in Williamsburg – on a truly beautiful night in New York City. I was so stoked when I saw the topic of this week’s challenge because I knew this photograph would be perfect. Here’s how Sara Rosso from The Daily Post introduced the challenge:
Layers. Layers can reveal, conceal, and make something more complex. They can vary in size, texture, color, or functionality. Each layer can have its own story, meaning, or purpose. They can overlap, blend, or be distinctly separate. A layer doesn’t have to be a part of a single object but can even be a slice of a multifaceted image or scene.
As I read this, I can find how this photograph contains a layer that does all of the above. I see a layer that reveals, adds complexity, and I can create a story/meaning/purpose for all of the different parts:
Background: Bright, strong city standing tall. Giving hope. Illuminating.
Foreground: Choatic sparks moving, crashing down. No direction.
Midground: Brother and sister, family, people using strength and hope (background) to tame the chaos (foreground) and create something beautiful, everlasting, productive (represented by the glowing circle).
That’s one take on it. I’d love to hear from you and see what interpretations you come up with!
Have a great day, Natalie
